Simpson Earns Another Honor

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State senior volleyball player Amber Simpson has earned a spot on the 2008 CVU.com (Collegiate Volleyball Update) Stellar Spikers team (honorable mention), which was released Thursday, Feb. 5.

Simpson (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been essential to the Aggies at the net throughout her career and has been named a two-time all-American for NMSU, while earning first-team all-WAC honors as a sophomore, junior and a senior. Simpson holds a pair of NMSU all-time career records. The first is for total blocks with 574 and the second is in the block assist category with 515. Head coach Mike Jordan understands what kind of player he had in Simpson.

“We’re very proud of Amber and all of her accomplishments and awards. She’s in great company on this list and is very deserving,” Jordan said.

Simpson earned American Volleyball Coaches Association All-West Region honorable mention honors for her play in 2008. She was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week five times in her career including twice in her freshman and senior seasons as well as academic all-WAC honors.

She has also etched her name onto a trio of other lists. She ranks third on both the all-time hitting percentage career list at .344 and the total blocks per game record with 1.25 blocks per set. Additionally, Simpson owns sixth place on the all-time kills list with 1,292.

CVU.com looked for players that displayed excellence and balance. They also considered the impact the player had on helping her team succeed as well as conference awards received. Simpson is among 88 student athletes from across the country receiving this honor. She was the only student athlete from the WAC on the list.
